About Vitamin B12
What it is and how it works.
Vitamin B12 is needed for a healthy nervous system and plays a role in the blood, cells and nerves. Low levels (deficiency) can be caused by diet or by conditions that affect how B12 is absorbed, and should be diagnosed by your GP with a blood test.
At Tanton Brown Skin Clinic, Isabel, an NMC-registered Independent Nurse Prescriber, can give vitamin B12 injections where they are clinically appropriate, following a consultation.
How it works
Vitamin B12 is given as hydroxocobalamin, a prescription-only medicine, by intramuscular injection into the deltoid muscle in the side of the upper arm.

Vitamin B12 FAQs
Who typically needs vitamin B12 injections?
Individuals who have been diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency, per medical advice, may require vitamin B12 injections. This may include people with pernicious anaemia or gastrointestinal disorders.
Who is a good candidate?
It is important that you see your doctor/GP if you suspect or display symptoms of B12 deficiency. It is also important not to exceed the recommended doses of B12. If you have a known vitamin B12 deficiency, then investigation of the cause and replacement should be conducted by your doctor/GP only.
Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. All treatments are for clients aged 18 and over. Isabel will check your suitability at your consultation.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with vitamin B12 injections?
Vitamin B12 injections are generally considered safe with minimal side effects. Rarely, individuals may experience pain, redness or bruising at the injection site, mild diarrhoea, or allergic reactions.

Can I take oral vitamin B12 supplements instead of injections?
Oral supplements can work for some people, but they rely on B12 being absorbed through the gut. Injections are given directly into the muscle, so they don’t depend on this.
Any deficiency should be diagnosed by your GP. Isabel’s treatment is aimed at your symptoms, so it can be a case of having the injections and watching how your symptoms respond over time.
